Bedroom ceiling fans. Things to consider. Part 1

Bedroom ceiling fans. Things to consider. Part 1

Bedroom ceiling fans are becoming more and more popular in the UK and for good reason. As our homes become more and more insulated and energy efficient our rooms have become warmer & stuffier. Ceiling fans, such as Fantasia fans, are great in pretty much all rooms in the home but none more so than a bedroom. Let’s face it, it can be really difficult to sleep when you are too warm. With that in mind I thought I would mention a few things to consider when fitting a ceiling fan in a bedroom.

One of the most important things to consider about a bedroom fan is the actual size. Ceiling fans tend to be measured by diameter of the blade turning circle. The average size of a fan in the UK is 42” and I would suggest this is around the size you should consider. 42” may sound quite large but actually we tend to think of something as a solid object and how big that may be where as in fact we are talking from blade tip to blade tip, which is a little different. The size of your ceiling fan has a bearing on 2 things that are very important when installing a fan in a bedroom. Firstly, a larger ceiling fan by nature will create more air movement and will be more cooling. Ceiling fans always tend to have at least 3 speeds so if the fan is of sufficient size you will always find a comfortable speed setting for the air movement that you would need.

Fans such as the Fantasia Viper come in 2 sizes (44" & 54") but there is no difference in price. The larger version is always recommended if you have the physical room as it produces the same air movement as the smaller on a slower setting

The size of the fan also has a bearing on another vital aspect. Comfort & noise. A noisy bedroom ceiling fan is pretty much useless. 2 things create noise on a ceiling fan. The motor and the air movement. If at all possible you should always choose the largest fan you can accommodate simply because a larger fan running at a slower speed creates the same air movement as a smaller fan on a higher speed but with significantly less noise created. A 54” bedroom fan creates the same air movement and cooling effect as a 36” fan running at high speed. It also looks calmer and is more relaxing to sleep under. Some ceiling fan models, such as the Fantasia Viper fan, comes in 2 sizes (44” & 54”) and the only difference is the pack of blades you get. They both cost the same to purchase so buying bigger doesn’t always mean paying more.

Speaking of noise, I would always consider paying that little bit more to buy a reputable bedroom fan. Cheap DIY store ceiling fans have their place in the market but the bedroom isn’t really one of them. In essence what would you prefer to lay under at night? A cheap fan with a noisy motor, minimal air movement and potentially a wobble, wondering if it’s going to fall down on you, or a ceiling fan made by a professional fan manufacturer that has designed the model to be stable, silent and creates adequate air movement?

There is nothing worse than sleeping under a wobbly ceiling fan, waiting for it to fall down on you!
